Our Power division, through our ownership in Energas S.A. (Energas), is the largest independent energy producer in Cuba with installed electrical generating capacity of 506 MW, representing approximately 10% of the national electrical generating capacity in Cuba.

The facilities of Energas facilities are located in Cuba at Varadero, Boca de Jaruco and Puerto Escondido. Sherritt holds a one-third interest in Energas, a Cuban joint venture established to process raw natural gas and generate electricity for sale to the Cuban national electrical grid. Unión Eléctrica (UNE) and Unión Cubapetróleo (CUPET) hold the remaining two-thirds interest in Energas. Raw natural gas is supplied free of charge to Energas by CUPET. The processing of raw natural gas produces clean natural gas, used to generate electricity, as well as by-products such as condensate and liquefied petroleum gas. 
 
Two combined cycle plants at the Energas facilities in Varadero and Boca de Jaruco produce low-cost electricity from one of the lowest carbon emitting sources of power in Cuba using steam generated from waste heat captured from the gas turbines. 

FACILITIES

Varadero

The Varadero facility is located approximately 140 kilometers east of Havana. The facility consists of two integrated raw gas processing plants, three gas turbines and associated electric generators, a heat exchange system for generating high-pressure steam, and a steam turbine and associated electric generator. Aggregate net power capacity of this facility is approximately 173 MW.

Puerto Escondido

The Puerto Escondido facilities, located approximately 75 kilometers east of Havana, consist of a raw gas processing plant and a gas turbine as well as an associated electrical generator with a net power capacity of 20 MW.

Boca de Jaruco

The Boca de Jaruco facility is located approximately 50 kilometers east of Havana and consists of a raw gas processing plant and five gas turbines and associated electric generators, a heat exchange system for generating high-pressure steam, and a steam turbine and associated electrical generators.
